Description
Atlas HO-Scale 1932 ARA Boxcar NYC (Demonstrator)
(Pre-Order)

Atlas 20005740  Road # 100000

A goal of the American Railway Association (ARA) in the early 1920s was to produce an all-steel box car that could be recognized as a standard by the member railroads. Although the original design presented in 1923 produced in excess of 60,000 cars, it wasn’t until a new design was presented in 1932 that the member railroads gave their approval.

After extensively testing five prototypes in 1933, over 14,500 cars were produced for twenty-three railroads throughout the following decade. This design soon evolved into the 1937, Modified 1937, and Postwar AAR box cars.

Although not the most popular design produced, numerically speaking, the 1932 ARA Standard box car is considered one of the most important designs in railroad history.

The paint scheme shown by Atlas, with the as-built gray or aluminum-paint carbody and black lettering, with a paint block over the original ARA reporting marks and the NYC marks substituted, also the NYC oval added. The presumption is that it was quickly painted in the NYC standard oxide red by 1935, but it was the depression so who knows how long they let it go.

It's a bit of a misnomer to call this a demonstrator. As the Atlas narrative says, there were five development prototypes built, which were subjected to extensive testing; the NYC 100000 was built as ARA 1 in September 1933.  At some point it was "assigned" to the NYC and re-stenciled as Atlas has shown with the NYC reporting marks and number, but it was still owned by the ARA/AAR. The car was purchased by NYC in November 1935, and in the period 1933-1935 it continued to be used more as a test mule, including close observation while handling revenue loads.  After 1935 it appears to have been released from testing and sold to NYC; it is likely that this was the time the car would have first been completely repainted in NYC-standard paint & lettering.  So our educated guess is that the p&l scheme proposed by Atlas was on the car during the period 1933-1935 when the car was mainly being subjected to testing, not owned by the NYC and not in general revenue service.

It was literally one of a kind on the NYC's roster, as they did not purchase any more AAR standard cars until 1940 when the design had evolved substantially.   The car was retired in 1961, and probably scrapped shortly thereafter.

Let's assume the Atlas model is correct for the production ARA '32 car; that would be very close to correct for some of the five development prototypes, including ARA 1/NYC 100000 (at least one of the other five had significant variances).  According to Ted Culotta's book, the design changes from ARA 1/NYC 100000 to production were minimal and minor.

The model as proposed by Atlas would be barely appropriate for almost all NYC modelers, if at all. But people like the unusual, so why not?
