Famed photographer Emery Gulash takes us out on his home turf to
photograph the ever-changing scene on the Michigan Central from 1940 up to the
1968 Penn Central merger. This period spans the NYC administrations of Gustav Metzman,
William White, Robert Young, and Alfred Perlman. Each successive administrator saw a more troubled
company, despite outward appearances. Emery
provides insightful color images of these tenuous decades. There is an emphasis on passenger trains, both
steam and diesel, along with MC’s Rail Diesel Cars (RDC’s). Lightening stripes predominate, but cigar
bands are definitely in evidence.
