Join former Metro North General Counsel Walter Zellig as he looks back on the fabled West Shore when it was a
major commuter road operating with Alcos and Baldwins serving the northeast
edge of New Jersey. After years of scaling back its facilities (as a result of the George Washington bridge's opening), the line
emerged as a major freight route for PC, Conrail, and now CSX. Watch (in color) as commuters from as far away as Kingston, NY rode down the NYC's New York, West Shore & Buffalo Railroad to a ferry terminal in Weehawken, NJ. There they transferred to ferry boats for the last few miles (knots) to Manhattan. CSX recently re-double tracked the north end (not covered by this volume).
